Central Asian nations are significantly tightening controls over tobacco products, with Tajikistan leading the charge by completely banning electronic cigarettes. This move reflects a regional effort to protect public health, particularly among youth.
Regional Ban on Vaping Products
The initiative in Tajikistan, which was proposed by the chairman of the upper house of parliament, aims to prevent negative health impacts on the population. This development places Tajikistan in line with neighboring countries that have already restricted these products.
Stricter Regulations Across Central Asia
- Turkmenistan banned electronic cigarettes and vapes back in 2023.
- Kazakhstan introduced criminal liability for selling smokeless tobacco products, electronic consumption systems, and their liquids in 2024.
- Kyrgyzstan banned the import and use of electronic cigarettes starting from July 1, 2025, with penalties including fines, community service, or up to two years in prison.
- In November of the same year, the President of Uzbekistan signed a law prohibiting the sale of e-cigarettes, with violations punishable by up to five years in prison.
Key Actions and Authorities
The measures signal a comprehensive shift towards controlling the circulation of vaping devices across the region, with specific penalties outlined for non-compliance in several countries.
