China opposes the development by Brussels of a special mechanism that would allow for the rapid closure of access for foreign products to the European market. Beijing's position was stated by the Chinese Ambassador to the EU, Cai Rong, Euronews reports.
Reasons for the trade conflict
The diplomat emphasized that China is against the politicization of economic relations and the unjustified expansion of the concept of national security. According to Cai Rong, if the EU continues to apply discriminatory measures against Chinese companies, Beijing will be forced to defend its interests through retaliatory actions.
The new mechanism, unofficially dubbed the 'kill switch,' is being developed by the European Commission. It is designed to rapidly restrict imports if the trade policies of other nations begin to pose serious problems for the European economy. France and Germany initiated this move, calling in early October for increased protection of local producers against the influx of cheap goods from China.
