The Chilean branch of a French institute of digital sciences and technology has received $2.5 million in funding from an American company to develop an AI model of the world ocean intended to help forecast the effects of climate change.

Key objectives and stages of the project

The model will be trained on diverse data sets, including physical, biological and genomic information. Using such a variety of data will make it possible to forecast changes in marine life even before those changes occur.

Expected results and warning systems

  • In the first six months, the project plans to create a management system, the first version of an open ocean data repository and the architecture of the model itself.
  • By the end of the three-year period, a refined public database and a trained model are expected.
  • The project also includes the creation of two early warning systems: one to detect harmful algal blooms off the coast of Chile that threaten aquaculture, and a second to monitor coral bleaching in French Polynesia.

Background

The project is being carried out with the participation of the Chilean branch of a French institute of digital sciences and technology, which received the funds from an American company to build the model.
