The global community possesses the technologies needed to counter climate change. However, access to these clean technologies remains highly uneven, particularly affecting developing countries, according to the report. These issues will be among the central topics at the 31st UN Climate Change Conference (COP31), which opens on November 9 in Antalya, Turkey.
Key areas of discussion at COP31
The conference agenda, with representatives from more than 190 countries taking part, includes discussion of several critically important areas. Selwin Hart, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Climate Action, stressed that the global community's task today is not only to develop new solutions but also to remove the obstacles hindering their adoption.
Main topics of the summit
- Climate finance: developing countries insist that wealthier states fulfill their financial obligations and expand access to funds to combat climate change.
- Just transition: countries must agree on concrete mechanisms for the transition to an environmentally sustainable economy.
- Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adaptation to global warming: these issues are also among the key topics for discussion.
Organization and focus of the summit
Turkey is the host and president of COP31. The negotiating process will be jointly led by Australia and the Pacific island states.
