Over the past day, several seismic events occurred in Kyrgyzstan. The force of these earthquakes in populated areas reached 3–3.5, while their epicenters were located in the Alai district of Osh region, not far from the border with Tajikistan.
Causes of increased tectonic activity
According to Kanatbek Abdrakhmatov, head of the Institute of Seismology of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, this increase in tectonic activity is no cause for concern. He noted that there are two periods during the year when the number of minor earthquakes increases — May and November.
- In May and November, the Earth's rotation changes by a thousandth of a second
- In spring, the rotation slows slightly, while in autumn it speeds up
- These changes affect tectonic activity in the region
Kanatbek Abdrakhmatov emphasized that, based on his professional experience, he sees no grounds for concern over the recorded fluctuations.
