The Mailuu-Suu Electric Lamp Plant, which was founded more than half a century ago after uranium mining in the city ceased, long served as a key employer for local residents. In Soviet times, the plant produced "Ilyich bulbs" for the entire country and also supplied them to other union republics in Central Asia.
Reorienting Production and Developing the Region
Although the enterprise's operations were partially suspended in recent years, the plant is actively preparing for change. According to information from Asem Zhusupov, deputy director of the Mailuu-Suu Industrial Park, a phase-out of incandescent bulb production is planned.
Instead, the enterprise intends to move to the production of LED products and glass containers. In addition, the city itself is actively developing its tourism potential and addressing issues related to the uranium legacy.
Current Situation at the Plant
Recently, the enterprise has faced difficulties, and most of its employees have lost their earnings. At the time of the journalists' visit, the plant building looked unkempt, making it difficult to tell whether production was continuing.
