The atmosphere in Warsaw is tense around the Constitutional Court. The situation escalated after Constitutional Tribunal judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska decided to suspend the duties of tribunal president Bogdan Swieczkowski and his deputy Bartlomiej Sochanski, ruling that they were preventing the tribunal from making decisions.

Conflict over the Constitutional Tribunal

As a result, both protesters and security forces gathered near the court building, leading to clashes. Judge Bogdan Swieczkowski and Jaroslaw Kaczynski tried to enter the tribunal building, but police did not allow them in.

Positions of the parties

The positions of the parties are diametrically opposed. Polish President Karol Nawrocki, cutting short a foreign trip, returned to the country and called what is happening a "coup d'etat." Representatives of the Law and Justice party also regard these events as an attack on the Constitutional Tribunal. However, representatives of Donald Tusk say that both President Nawrocki and conservative forces have violated the constitutional order by blocking the work of the judges.

Context

The crisis is rooted in a long-running confrontation inside the tribunal itself between those appointed by Donald Tusk's Civic Platform party and the conservative Law and Justice party.
