Acute respiratory viral infections (ARVI) can affect different parts of the respiratory system — from the upper tract (causing a runny nose, inflammation of the pharynx, larynx and trachea) to the lower tract (bronchitis or pneumonia). According to family doctor Taalaigul Tashpaeva of Family Medicine Center No. 4, most viral infections without complications can resolve on their own within five to seven days.
Risks and recommendations for treating ARVI
The specialist strongly recommends that parents not start treating children with antibiotics in the first days of illness without first consulting a doctor. Taalaigul Tashpaeva explained that antibiotics have no effect on viruses, and their improper use contributes to the development of bacterial resistance to antimicrobial drugs.
Main measures of care for ARVI
- Plenty of fluids
- Use of saline solutions to cleanse and moisten the nose
- Use of fever-reducing medications if necessary
- Use of nasal decongestants only as prescribed by a doctor
The doctor stressed that the decision to prescribe any medications, including antibiotics, must be made only by a doctor after assessing the child's condition and determining the real need for such treatment.
