Project and planning of the pedestrian space
The idea of creating a full-fledged pedestrian zone on Gastello Street was presented by city authorities in the summer of 2023. The project was implemented under the presidential decree "Jashyl Muras" and on the instructions of the Bishkek mayor.
General project parameters
The section in question is Gastello Street, more than 500 meters long, located between Mederov and Abai streets in Pervomaisky district. According to the mayor's office, about 28 million som were spent on the project.
Purpose and elements of the improvement
The idea was that the street should become not just a place for walks, but a multifunctional public space. Architects at Bishkekglavarhitektura developed a project that included a public garden, a pedestrian alley along the distribution canal, as well as recreation areas, shops and cafes.
In addition, the project included a play area with wooden structures and a unique device, the "Archimedes screw," which was intended to serve as an educational element.
Rationale for choosing the location
The choice of this particular street was due to several factors. As Bishkek City Kenesh deputy Ruslan Sharshenbai uulu explained, this section initially had a small amount of vehicle traffic. In addition, the area has abundant greenery and dense residential development, and hotels and hostels are located nearby.
