According to Taalaibek Ibraev, the emergence of a nuclear power plant of its own in Kyrgyzstan is inevitable, since the country is going through a period of economic growth and rising electricity consumption. The former official drew these conclusions in an interview with the Erkin-Too newspaper.
The need for a nuclear power plant in the context of the country's development
Supporting the initiative, Ibraev noted that population growth and industrial development directly lead to an increased need for electricity. He stressed that the question of building a nuclear plant will sooner or later have to be resolved.
The former energy minister also said that he fully shares the position of his successor. Altynbek Rysbekov, speaking in the Jogorku Kenesh on October 21, had earlier already called the construction of a nuclear power plant a requirement of the times.
History of negotiations on the nuclear power plant
Ibraev recalled that the discussion of the topic is not new. He said that negotiations with the Russian state corporation Rosatom began back in January 2022. At that time, the parties signed a memorandum on cooperation in the construction of low-capacity nuclear power plants.
Thus, according to former and current officials, the energy situation requires support for the construction of a nuclear power plant.
