The initiative to increase the permitted electricity consumption capacity applies exclusively to multi-apartment residential buildings with single-phase electricity meters where heating is provided solely by electricity. This was reported by the National Electric Grid of Kyrgyzstan (NESK).

What is changing and for whom

The increase of the limit to 7 kW is aimed at ensuring living conditions for citizens during the heating season, when the load on power grids rises due to the simultaneous use of household appliances and electric heaters. According to NESK, there are 276 such apartment buildings in Bishkek.

It should be noted that for all other consumers, electricity supply will remain at the same level — 5 kilowatt-hours. The Ministry of Energy initiated the proposal and submitted the relevant issue for consideration to the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Reasons for revising the standards

The revision of the standards became possible after numerous appeals from citizens. Residents say the current limit of 5 kW for single-phase connections proves insufficient when several modern household appliances and electric heaters are used at the same time, especially in the autumn-winter period. Energy companies, in turn, explain that the current 5 kW restriction is set out in existing regulations and is necessary to prevent grid overload and preserve equipment at hydroelectric power plants during peak consumption periods.
