Lawyer for Tilekmat Kuranov, Asel Argymbaeva, said the activist's detention period expired on October 10. According to her, the defense has already four times drawn the court's attention to the exceeding of the legally established period, but the defendant is still being held in the detention center.
Violation of the legal detention periods
According to Argymbaeva, the court's actions violate the law. She noted that under parts 3 and 4 of Article 303 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic, once a case reaches the court, the defendant's detention may be extended by no more than one year, with each extension lasting up to two months.
After this total period expires, no further extension is permitted, and the defendant must be released immediately. Recall that Kuranov's case reached the Leninsky District Court on October 10, 2025.
Circumstances of the case and the detention
Tilekmat Kuranov is accused of public calls for the violent seizure of power. The State Committee for National Security (GKNB) previously said he had published posts and video addresses on social media calling for the organization of mass unrest and an attempt to violently seize power while outside Kyrgyzstan.
- Kuranov was detained on April 19, 2025
- The same day he was brought from the United Arab Emirates to Kyrgyzstan
During the latest hearing in Kuranov's case at the Leninsky District Court in Bishkek, according to Argymbaeva, the court was questioning witnesses. The next hearing is scheduled for November 10.
