Emergency services in Isfahan province prepared and published recommendations for Iran's public on what to do in the event of a nuclear explosion. As part of Civil Defense Week, a training video was released explaining how to protect yourself from the shock wave, find shelter and avoid radioactive contamination.

Precautions for citizens

Residents are advised not to look at the flash of the explosion and to take cover behind solid obstacles. After the shock wave passes, they should head to the nearest building. Inside, they should stay away from windows, close doors and turn off ventilation that brings in air from outside.

  • After contact with radioactive dust, outer clothing should be carefully removed and placed in a tightly closed bag
  • All exposed areas of skin must be washed
  • People are advised to stay in shelter for at least 24 hours
  • Bottled water and food in sealed packaging should be consumed
  • The shelter should be left only in line with official recommendations

Context

The publication of the recommendations came amid heightened tensions between Iran, the United States and Israel. At the same time, the Iranian authorities stressed that they do not link the document's release to any specific threat and have not announced that a nuclear strike is inevitable.
