Neuralink CEO Elon Musk said on social network X that the Blindsight implant, developed to restore vision, is engineering-ready and awaiting approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

How the Blindsight technology works

Unlike the company's previous developments, Blindsight does not read signals from the brain. Instead, it records visual information and transmits it directly to the visual cortex, bypassing the damaged optic nerve and eyes.

Status and prospects of the device

The FDA previously granted the device breakthrough technology status in September 2024. However, as the data clarified, this status speeds up review but does not constitute recognition that the implant is safe or effective, and does not permit its sale. At present, the device remains experimental.
