The initiative was announced during a meeting within the Astana Process in Astana. The creation of such an office is intended to help regional states more effectively counter terrorist threats and extremism.

Tasks and Technology Use

The activities of the planned UN unit will focus on providing practical assistance to Central Asian countries. Specifically, the office will assist in launching terrorist content warning channels and identifying cases of terrorism financing.

Special attention is proposed to the use of artificial intelligence (AI). Technologies should assist specialists in professional development and effective threat monitoring. Meeting participants also supported the UN's global dialogue on AI governance, aiming to transform new digital tools from a source of danger into a means of ensuring security.

Countering Radicalization

In addition to technical aspects, the meeting, which was also attended by Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon, discussed mechanisms to prevent radicalization, especially among youth. The parties emphasized the need for experience sharing and expanding practical cooperation to combat new digital challenges.
