As part of efforts to bring back the goitered gazelles that disappeared from Kyrgyzstan in the 1990s, a project to boost the animal's population is under way in Ton district. The Jeyren Ordos state zoological reserve currently keeps 70 goitered gazelles, and another 30 are planned for release into the wild this year.

Stages and scale of the animal's return

According to ranger Ermek Shabykeev, the population restoration project began in 2021. The goitered gazelles that lived in the region during Soviet times had disappeared by the 1990s. Restoration began with animals brought in from Bukhara region of Uzbekistan.
