The EU's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, publicly noted that it is becoming harder to explain to European society the need to continue supporting Kyiv in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

On the statements and the parties' positions

Speaking during a public discussion at the University of Montreal, Kallas stressed that while resilience must be maintained and additional steps taken to support Ukraine, it is generally becoming harder for people to justify this because of the widespread fatigue with the war.

Positions of other participants in the discussion

Other officials also commented on the situation. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said some European countries are making efforts to curb Western fatigue over support for Ukraine. Russia's UN envoy, Vassily Nebenzia, previously noted that Kyiv's sponsors are, in his words, tired of the issue but are forced to keep it afloat.

Russia's position on the conflict

Russia believes that arms supplies to Ukraine hinder a settlement of the conflict and also directly draw NATO countries into the conflict, describing this as "playing with fire."

Kallas made her remarks during a discussion with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand.
