United Nations Deputy Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, presented regional development priorities during the UN Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA) Economic Forum in Bishkek.
Key directions for the region's sustainable growth
According to the UN representative, the emphasis is on several vital directions, since most countries in the region are landlocked. These directions are aimed at improving economic resilience and reducing costs.
Transport and trade links
In the transport sector, particular attention is given to developing efficient logistics and transport corridors. Harmonizing border procedures and developing cross-border cooperation are recognized as an important aspect.
Digitalization and paperless trade
In the area of digitalization, the emphasis is on introducing paperless trade. This will reduce operating costs and delays, as well as improve the compatibility of customs systems. ESCAP supports this work through instruments such as the Framework Agreement on Facilitation of Cross-border Paperless Trade in Asia and the Pacific and the SPECA Roadmap for the Digitalization of Multimodal Transport.
