The renaming of streets in Bishkek has affected not only names but also house numbers, causing significant difficulties for residents of the capital. As a result, residents are lost in the new address system, and finding even familiar establishments turns into a complicated process.
Navigation problems and everyday difficulties
Residents of the capital share stories about how the new address system affects daily life. Problems arise even in cases where streets did not undergo official renaming.
- One resident said that because of the address confusion she had to overpay for a taxi. She was heading to 491 Jibek Jolu Avenue (between Panfilov and Logvinenko streets), but the taxi driver took her in a completely different direction — to an area previously known as the village of Lebedinovka. It later turned out that the building she needed is listed under number 1067.
- Another resident had difficulties trying to call a taxi after a wedding at the "Tamga" restaurant-teahouse in Lebedinovka. According to witnesses, when the address was entered into Google Maps, a different address was displayed, and the taxi driver took them to a neighboring building, as a result of which the cafe turned out to be significantly farther away, requiring an additional 15-minute trip.
Official services do not solve the problem
Despite the launch of an address search service by the Bishkek Mayor's Office, local residents note that it does not solve the broader everyday problems related to navigation and paperwork.
The difficulties arose after some villages joined Bishkek, which led to changes in house numbers.
